OVERVIEW
The 4-Square Rondo is a high-intensity, competitive ball movement game played on four connected 10×10 grids. Four equal teams compete simultaneously, with play moving in a counterclockwise direction.
HOW IT WORKS
Each team works to complete 5–10 passes within their grid against two defenders, then plays the ball to the next grid to score a point. Simply reaching the pass target is not enough — the ball must then be successfully moved to the next grid. When a team sends the ball forward, they also send two defenders into the receiving team’s grid.
DEFENDING AND TRANSITIONS
If defenders win the ball, they can bring it back to their own grid. If the ball gets knocked into an adjacent grid by accident, that team takes possession and the next team in rotation must send two defenders. This keeps all players alert and constantly thinking.
KEY COACHING POINTS
- First touch under pressure is critical — it sets up the next pass
- Scanning and awareness of defenders before receiving the ball
- Speed of play must be controlled — playing too fast leads to loss of control
- Pass weight matters — don’t play hard balls into teammates who are already under pressure
- Know when to take extra touches to invite pressure, then break it
WHY COACHES LOVE IT
Players consistently ask to play this game because of its competitive nature and high energy. It works equally well for boys and girls. It functions as an advanced rondo that trains quick thinking alongside technical passing skills in a game-realistic, pressured environment.
